Sci-Fi's Brave New World
In recent years, movie and television audiences have been treated to stories both captivating and curious. We've watched extra-dimensional aliens instruct pre-Columbian Native Americans in the basics of civilization. We've looked on as an ancient super-race reluctantly assumes the role of modern superheroes. We've cheered genetically advanced humans with their assortment of superpowers. And we've marveled as residents of space or the future reveal secrets of human origin and destiny.
Battlestar Galactica heads for the finish line on Sci-Fi Network
"Battlestar Galactica" cast member Kate Vernon says she gets a strange feeling as she watches the final episodes of the popular Sci-Fi Network series tick off.
She plays Ellen Tigh, a recurring character who was killed in season three but returned for this season to be revealed as the fifth Cylon, which for the fans was a huge twist.
"Over the years, they would call me, I called them, and I'd go shoot all of these episodes, and now it's over," Vernon told the Daily News. "There's sort of a ghost memory - my phone should ring and I should be going back."
But she's not, nor is anyone else on the show.
Orlando Bloom Heads To The Future For Sci-Fi The Cross
After he shot to fame in “The Lord of the Rings,” it seemed like Orlando Bloom was in starring in every other big-budget film. His star dimmed a bit, and he hasn’t really been attached to any blockbuster projects in the last year. But it looks like 2009 is set to be a bit of a comeback for him, as Variety reports that he has just signed on to star in “The Cross” alongside Olga Kurylenko (”Quantum of Solace”), and Vincent Cassel (”Eastern Promises.”)
Gears of War Movie Will Be Like Lord Of The Rings But "Harder Edged"Live Free Or Die Hard director Len Wiseman is helming the Gears movie and co-writing it with Fast & Furious scribe Chris Morgan. And yes, Wiseman is not a gamer, but a grabber. Admitting that he "sucks" at video games, Wiseman (pictured, with friend) happened on Gears when he was asked to select a video game to appear the background of a scene while making Live Free or Die Hard. "I said 'this one looks really, really cool whatever it is,' and it was Gears Of War," explains Wiseman. "I just really connected with it; the design of it the world, the whole thing. So I actually brought an Xbox 360 to start researching what it was."
Samuel L. Jackson picks up the sword againIt's a point of pride for Samuel L. Jackson that if you list every film in which he has starred or appeared and add up their box-office receipts, the collective total would be higher than any other on-screen actor in history. That might be some arcane career calculus, but it does speak to the 60-year-old actor’s crowded schedule and crowd-pleasing sensibility. On a recent afternoon, talking about his varied pursuits, Jackson began a sentence with, "In my spare time ..." but couldn’t even finish the thought without laughing out loud. Jackson appeared in six films last year, and when discussing his upcoming ventures he has to pause to remember some of the titles and costars.
